Pauls Stradiņš Museum of the History of Medicine

The Pauls Stradi Museum of the History of Medicine is a journey into the history of medicine and the museum. The museum's expositions, descriptions of objects, and interior reflect its various stages and enable visitors to learn about medicine's history up until the middle of the 20th century.

The development of medicine is chronicled in the museum's main exhibit. In addition to seeing a medieval town that was designed by Professor Pauls Stradi, visitors can learn about the most common diseases and how they were treated at the time at a hospital and pharmacy in a medieval monastery.

Instruments, devices, and people from the 19th century serve as examples of the medical profession's professionalization and scientific advancements. The microbiologist and winner of the Nobel Prize, Ilya Mechnikov, is a major part of the museum's collection. However, animals as well as humans contribute to the advancement of science. The "two-headed dog," the product of Soviet doctor Demikhov's transplantation experiment, is one of the museum's most impressive exhibits.

Cosmic Biology and Medicine, a one-of-a-kind exhibit on human experiences in space, is also on display at the museum.

One of Latvia's most visited museums, the Pauls Stradi Museum of the History of Medicine opened its doors to the public for the first time in 1961. Thematic exhibitions and events on socially relevant and interesting topics are held annually.
